We support people experiencing communication and swallowing challenges following neurological injury and complex health conditions — restoring clarity, safety, confidence and participation in everyday life by placing communication at the heart of rehabilitation.

We work across private, medico-legal, hospital and local-authority rehabilitation pathways where communication difficulties affect engagement, decision-making and rehabilitation outcomes.

Brain aneurysm · recovery
After my brain aneurysm, I faced years of fear, frustration, and uncertainty. From 2018 to 2022, Sam was my speech therapist — and she became a lifeline during my recovery. She helped me relearn how to speak, how to write, and how to rebuild my confidence when I felt completely lost. Sam supported me with patience, skill, and genuine care. She taught me coping strategies that helped me manage anger and overwhelming emotions, and she encouraged me gently but consistently until I believed I could return to work. I was terrified of speaking to strangers, yet with Sam I always felt safe. She even took me outside to a café so I could practice speaking in real-life situations. Her presence — whether on the phone or in person — made me feel understood and never alone. She also involved her colleagues to support my Urdu speech, making sure every part of my recovery was cared for. Although I never fully regained my pre-aneurysm speech, Sam's dedication and compassion helped me reclaim my independence and my sense of self. I fully endorse Sam and her colleagues. She played a crucial role in giving me my life back.

TBI · return to work
In 2020 I had an accident which resulted in a serious traumatic brain injury. During my recovery I had to learn how to speak again. With the help of Sam and the Talkabout team I began to be able to communicate with my family. This was a difficult time but with sessions first with Sam and then other members of the team my speech has progressed to me being able to communicate on the phone and deal with everyday situations. Sam and the team have given me the confidence to get a job and have helped me make significant progress in my personal and work life.

Family perspective
We have been extremely happy with Mark and Claire's speech & language therapy input. They have always been so compassionate and immediately developed a very good, close rapport with mum. This in turn made her feel comfortable in their company which had a positive effect on her speech. Therapy has also given her lots of pleasure, a purpose, increased self-confidence and hope that her language will continue to improve.

Speech & swallow recovery
I gained confidence with my speech and swallow through regular therapy sessions. My Therapist was fantastic and I wouldn't be where I am now in my recovery journey without their invaluable help.

Rehabilitation starts with communication

Neurological injury rarely affects speech alone. It can alter identity, relationships, therapy engagement, safety, capacity and autonomy. Without effective communication, rehabilitation can stall. With clear and evidence-based support, progress becomes coherent, collaborative and sustainable.

Our role as specialist speech and language therapists is to:

  • 01Restore clarity and safety
  • 02Reduce communication-related risk
  • 03Enable meaningful participation in decision-making
  • 04Strengthen therapeutic engagement
  • 05Support long-term independence

Many members of our team hold a specialist interest in dysphagia and complex swallowing needs.

Interdisciplinary collaboration

Neurological rehabilitation is complex — truly effective support for specialist communication and swallowing needs cannot happen in isolation. At Talkabout, we are committed to genuine interdisciplinary team (IDT) working, going beyond simply sharing information to collaborate towards a shared understanding of the person, integrating knowledge across disciplines and thinking creatively to solve complex problems. Research consistently shows this leads to significantly better outcomes than traditional multidisciplinary working.

We work closely with case managers and the wider team — including neuropsychologists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, dietitians, nursing, care and legal teams — ensuring specialist communication strategies are understood and applied consistently by everyone involved. This means both supporting the individual to communicate as effectively as possible, and equipping those around them to communicate with them in ways that work. Because when a team truly works together, the outcomes for the people they support are transformed.

Customer Feedback

Multi-year collaboration
I have worked with Talkabout Speech & Language Therapists for several years now and found them to be of the highest calibre. Sam and Roxi are both incredibly knowledgeable, use practical problem solving and evidence-based strategies, and are great communicators with clients and MDT members alike. I could not recommend them more highly.
